"As a teen, I was invited to the 'openings' of my parent's dinner parties, where my dad, who delighted in all things Burgundy and Bordeaux, would offer me a small pour of wine and ask for my olfactory impressions. I'll always remember the evening I discovered a marriage of river rocks, wet leather from the underside of a saddle, hay flecked with wildflowers, and golden apples in a single pour. "Ah," Dad said, nodding in encouragement, "Puligny-Montrachet." And I laughed because the name itself was as delightfully poetic to my ear as the wine had been to my nose and mouth. Even though those youthful days were rich with honest smell - kitchen, backyard, woods, stream, and farm - I'll always remember being most awed by the abundant and complex smells I found in a single glass of wine."
